In this study, Rong’an and Huapi kumquat were taken as materials, the morphology of flower bud, flower and young fruit, the shoot traits and their influence on fruit setting and fruit quality, also fruit development of both kumquat are studied, in order to reveal the mechanism of flower bud differentiation and provide a theoretical basis for high yield and high quality in kumquat production. The results are as follows:1. Kumquat’s flower bud differentiation included six main stages:undifferentiation phase, induction differentiation phase, sepal differentiation phase, petal differentiation phase, stamen and pistil differentiation phase, ovary differentiation phase. The flower bud differentiation lasted for about a month. Pistil differentiation was just1-2days later than stamen.2. During flower differentiation period, and the content of soluble sugar, soluble protein and starch of leaves and shoots increased gradually, and POD activity increased markedly. All the matter content and POD activity decreased after pistil differentiation phase..3. In mid-September, treatments of band girdle and PP333spray could promote the content of soluble sugar and starch of leaves, and had effect on C/N ratio although it was not significant.4. The fruit bearing had significantly positive correlation with the length and diameter of bearing basal shoot and leaflet number in a certain range. The best fruit bearing was observed when branches were2.92-3.35mm in diameter and7.5-20.5cm in length in Rong’an kumquat and2.81-3.15mm in diameter and6.5-21cm in length in Huapi kumquat.5. The diameter of bearing basal shoots had larger effect on fruits size and sugar content in Rong’an kumquat, however it had small effect on the content of soluble protein and Vc. In Huapi kumquat, the length of bearing basal shoots had larger effect on fruits size and quality, while the effects of other traits of the bearing basal shoots on fruit quality were not significant.
