Heart failure, a variety of canine cardiac structure/functional abnormity, bring a syndrome that the heart can’t pump out enough blood for the body. Thedisease mainly occurs in aged small breeds, such as Pekingese, Pomeranian,Chihuahua, Miniature pinscher et al. Limited to the development of the domestic pethealthcare, clinical diagnostic methods are mainly restricted to symptoms observation, cardiac auscultation and thoracic X-Ray inspection. According to different clinicalmanifestations, there are different classification methods of heart failure, such asNYHA, ISACHC and, AHA/ACC classification. In general, sodium nitroprusside(SNP) is the first choice to cure heart failure clinically. It can expand the capacitancevessels and resistance vessels, and improve ventricular function by reducing thepre-load and after-load of heart, especially in acute heart failure. Blood pressuremonitoring should be taken, because it has strong effect. And its metabolites canpoison the body. So it is not suggested for dogs with dysfunctions of the liver and thekidney. Objective: This study involves the diagnosis, clinical symptoms andmedicines management of the cardiac failure by means of the analysis of the clinicalcases to provide the guidance and reference for the clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods:25heart failure dogs were chosen for this study. Base on clinicalmanifestations, cardiac auscultation, thoracic X-Ray inspection, different therapeuticschedule were implemented. According to the speed of onset and biochemical testresults, two different methods were taken to treat. For the15dogs with acute attackand less dysfunction in liver and kidney, SNP were used combined with diuretics,ACE-I and Q10, and in conjunction with symptomatic treatment. For the10cases withslow onset, serious damage in liver and kidney, SNP was not suggested, ACE-I withdiuretic and Q10was adopted. Results: In the25cardiac failure dogs,20cases weresurvived and5cases were dead(one of them died from treatment abandoning, and onedied two months after discharge). One case in the15cases which were treated withSNP was dead during treatment, one case was asked to be given up by the owner andone was dead after discharged about two months. Also there were two dead cases inthe10cases which were not suggested using SNP. Conclusion:(1)Heart failure should be diagnose based on clinical symptoms, combined with the thoracic X-Rayinspection,(2)The effect of SNP on acute heart failure is infallible.
