At present, fuel ethanol as a kind of renewable clean energy has been widely concerned. Nowadays, it has developed to the second generation-lignocellulosic fuel ethonal. It is meaningful to research and develop tree species with high fiber quality and high biomass, which helps guarantee the supply of raw material for fuel ethanol production and get rid of the dependence on food. In order to study the differences of lignocellulose content among 8 black locust clones (varieties) and 7 poplar clones (varieties), Cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin content in different growing period were determined. The growing states and effects of pretreatment were also considered to evaluate the quality for bioethanol. This paper provides important basis and guidelines for bioethanol production. For black locust, the variation of components and growth states in different period were studied. The main conclusions were as follows:(1)For the branches of 2-year-old and 6-year-old black locust, the mean lignocellulosic components content except lignin of 8 clones varied differently according to different growth period. Besides, the differences between 8 clones’ components were various among different growth period. For 2-year-old black locust:the lignocellulosic components content except hemicellulose had significant differences in the early growth stage and late growth period. And all the lignocellulosic components content had significant differences in the fast growth stage. For 6-year-old black locust:there were significant differences between hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin content in the early growth stage. There were no significant differences between hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin content in the fast growth stage. In the late growth period, significant differences were found between hemicellulose and lignin content.(2) The mean holocellulose content of poplar was between 32.2% and 50.6%.The mean hemicellulose content was between 15.1% and 21.5%. The mean cellulose content was between 15.1% and 32.7%. The mean lignin content was between 15.4% and 25.8%.(3)8048、8044 and common black locust had a height and diameter advantages on the other clones. So they had larger biomass. Besides, the three clones contained more holocellulose、cellulose and less lignin than the others in the branches in late growth period. They also had a better pretreatment effect. It is obvious that they are more suitable to be used as the feedstock for biofuel.(4)Among the 7 poplar varieties, Populus×euramericana cv.’74/76’ had the largest biomass, followed by Triploid Populus tomentosa B301 and Xinxiang 5.However, Xinxiang 3 and Xinxiang 4 contain more holocellulose、cellulose and less lignin than the others in the branches. Xinjiang 5 had a better pretreatment effect.
