In order to add value to marigold straw, as well as reducing waste straw pollution, this study determined the primary composition of marigold straw, and prepared activated carbon following the one-stage method. To analysis the influence on the pore structure, an orthogonal experimental design was used, and the preferable conditions for preparing activated carbon wasdetermine. The pore structure of preferable activated carbon was characterized through physical adsorption of N2 at-196℃. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics models were used to fit the adsorption process of preferable carbon to copper ion, as well as to analysis the adsorption dynamic equilibrium, adsorption strength and rate control process. The straw vinegar was collected and the organic components were detected by GC-MS method. Results shown a high holocellulose content of 49.67% in marigold straw, with a lignin content of 33.77%. The preferable carbon with a higher iodine adsorption value (1145.38mg/g) was prepared with anactivation time of 2h at 400℃, with a 2:1 weight ratio of the activator to the raw material. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm illustrateda micropore structure and a BET surface area corresponding to 1344.23m2/g, with a micropore surface areaup to1113.65m2/g.The copper ion adsorption experiments shown the adsorption time, initial concentration, dosage and pH both had great influence on the adsorption rate and amount. Both adsorption isotherm models were fitted to adsorption process with a high relevancy over 0.97. Pseudo-second-order kinetics models shown a greater relevancy for activated carbon’s adsorption to copper ion. We found 31 kinds of organic components in straw vinegar, acids substance and ketone were the most contents, with a content of 43.11% and 18.98%, respectively.
