There is a large area of plantations in Jianghuai region, but the growth of seedlings is not well with poor management. Feeding chickens in the forest in Jianghuai already long since appeared, but most parts have excessed the biological capacity of the woodland, caused a series of environmental problems, and also increased the breeding cost. This study analyses the effect of free-range chicken to the growth of the trees and undergrowth in the forest-grass-chicken compound ecological system, as well as the changes of carbon stock in this system in order to providing theoretical and technical support of the development of economy in the forest and increasing "carbon sink" by forest-chicken symbiosis.Get the following main conclusions:1. The difference of chicken between caged chickens and free-range chickens was not marked, different varieties of free-range chickens had their advantages in meat quality and and economic benefit.2. A year later, the difference of trees’average diameter in the processing zone was not obvious (p<0.05), feeding chickens in the forest would not hinder the normal growth of trees.3. A year later, the low intensity (10 chickens per mu) of breeding did not significantly affect the vegetation, but the high intensity of breeding severely damaged the growth of undergrowth, the reasonable breeding intensity would not hinder the growth and development of the understory.4. High intensity (Buttonwood A and Magnolia F15 and F20) of breeding significantly reduced carbon stock, the reducing was more obvious when the intensity turn higher. But if the breeding intensity was too low, the soil organic carbon was wasted as well as the economic benefit was limited.5. After integrated analysis of the effect of the symbiosis to the trees, undergrowth, soil total carbon, organic carbon and carbon stock, we concluded that the best biological capacity of forest-chicken symbiosis was about 20 chickens per mu in Jianghuai region. The forest-grass-chicken compound ecological system can combine the ecological benefits and economic benefits, it is a suitable economic development model for the sustainable development in Jianghuai region.
