The research of drought resistance and ornamental value on Betula platyphylla and Quercus mongolica planted in the first phase of the demonstration project in the Cloud Computing base of the Inner Mongolia Hesheng Science and Technology Limited Company has been done. By comparing the leaf anatomical structure and MDA content, relative electric conductivity, SOD activity, soluble sugar, soluble protein content and free proline in natural growing state, we study and analysis whether Betula platyphylla and Quercus mongolica is suitable for extensive management in Huhhot area without lower the ornamental value. This study will provide some certain reference value to build water-saving landscape in Hohhot area. The mainly resules are:1.The developed palisade tissue and the main veins raise water utilizing efficiency. The ratio of palisade tissue and spongy tissue in Betula platyphylla is higher than that in Quercus mongolica. Though diameter of the main vein in Betula platyphylla is longer, it doesn’t mean that we can prove Quercus mongolica has better drought resistance. In order to analysis precisely and objectively, variance analysis and the method of membership function are used. The results show that the resistance of Betula platyphylla is slightly higher than Quercus mongolica.2.In June and September, the relative electric conductivity increases, and so is MDA content. The MDA content of Quercus mongolica increases most in June, July, August and September while the growth of which of Betula platyphylla is relatively slow. The SOD activity of both were increased as the raining decreased. Which appears the same change trend with MDA content in different months. These shows that Betula platyphylla is better than Quercus mongolica on drought resistance.3.The accumulation of proline is different between Betula platyphylla and Quercus mongolica. And the accumulation of proline in Quercus mongolica is smaller. The content of soluble sugar is more stable than other measures when in dry months, and which in Quercus mongolica has a larger amount. The content of soluble protein in Betula platyphylla is more steady and changes less than it in Quercus mongolica. Based on the study of these physiological and biochemical indexes, the conclusion that the drought resistance of Betula platyphylla is stronger than that of Quercus mongolica can be draw.4.Through the evaluation and analysis of the appearance anatomic parameters and physiological indexes of Betula platyphylla and Quercus mongolica, the result is proved consistent and precise. This shows that these indexes and methods of evaluation chosen in this study can reflect different ability of drought resistance of different species of trees in the same growing environment.5.The results of the test were generally the same as the external morphological characters in the process of the test, which also shows that whether the drought resistance of this two species is strong or not does not influence the ornamental characters of them.
