The experiment was carried out with Fuji apple trees grafted onto SH40seedling inter-stocks. Effects of different SH40seedling inter-stocks on tree characters, fruit quality, and physiological and biochemical indexes three aspects were studied. Tree characters included tree size, composition of shoot types and new shoot growth. Fruit quality included fruit development and maturation of Fuji apple. Physiological and biochemical indexes included the leaves of POD,SOD and IOD activities, the leave of total phenol content and the endogenous hormone content. The effects and inherent mechanism of SH40seedling inters-tocks on the growth and results of Fuji apple tree were discussed. The mine results were as fellows:1. Fuji apple trees on No.2and No.6seedling inter-stocks showed a significant feature of dwarfing, but the total shoots of which was obviously less than the control. But Fuji apple trees on No.2and No.6seedling inter-stocks first to bloom and bloomed for four years. The height of Fuji apple trees on No.212seedling inter-stock was shorter than the control, but the total shoots and the ratio of short shoot and leafage shoot were obviously higher than the control. Fuji apple trees on No.178seedling inter-stocks showed higher than the control on tree high, the total shoots and the ratio of short shoot.2. Different inter-stocks markedly affected fruit apparent quality. All tested materials showed no significant difference in fruit shape index and colour aberration, but showed significant difference in single fruit weight and fruit color. Fuji apple trees on No.202had the biggest single fruit weight. The best malic acid conent was the fruit of Fuji apple trees on No.28.3. The effect of different SH40seedling inter-stocks on fruit interior quality was signi-ficantly different. Changes of total sugar, fructose, glucose, sucrose in fruit of Fuji apple on four inter-stock types had a similar trend during fruit development. Apple fruit total sugar content mainly depended on the content of fructose and sucrose. But varied in amount, the total sugar content of Fuji apple on inter-stock No.178was higher than No.212and control. At harvest, Fuji apple trees on No.6had the highest fruit firmness and soluble solid. The best fruit color is the fruit of Fuji apple trees on No.2. 4. Great differences of POD activities existed in leaves of different experimental materials and there was a significant negative correlation between POD activities and the growth potential of Red Fuji apple trees grafted onto SH40seedling inter-stocks before leaf abscission in fall, and there was a significant positive correlation between IOD activities and the negative of Red Fuji apple trees.5. There was a significant positive correlation between total phenol content and the potential of Red Fuji apple trees before leaf abscission in fall.6. There was a significant negative correlation between the content of ABA of leaves in fall and the height and the Variety Stem diameter of Fuji apple trees and there was a positive correlation between the ratio of IAA to ABA from different experimental materials and the new shoots growth and height of Fuji apple trees. The ratio of (IAA+ZR+GA)/ABA had the similar rule.
