Saperda populnea L.is a serious stem boring pest of Salicaceae plants in the domestic and overseas, which was reported in Korea, Bulgaria, Finland, Poland, and Croatia and in the northeastern and northwestern part of China. It has caused serious damages that lead to dry branches and finallythe plants die. The mating behavior and reproductive factors were discussedfrom the chemical ecology. The courtship ritual, communication factors, and cephalic appendages of S.populnea were reported as follow:1.The mating of poplar longicorn was observed in a cage of insect room, and the incisions and oviposition of poplar longicorn was studied in the wire gauze in the forest. Results showed that the mating duration is 10-240 minutes, and the average is 180 minutes. There is repeat mating phenomenon, that the number of repeat mating reach 2-10 times and each mating duration is 2-30 seconds. There are two horseshoe-shaped incisions on the ring around host branches. Grooving single incision needs 2-3 minutes. After gnawing the bark surface, the female usually laid one egg in per incision. The number of eggs laid for one female depended upon the longevity of their individual, and poplar longicorn have stronger fertility.2.Some factors includingmeteorology, vision and olfactionimpactcourtship of S.Populneathrough the observation mating and Y-tube olfactionbioassay. The visionplays an important role when S.Populneafinds mate. The vision was more important than olfaction in the courtship ofS.Populnea. The sex pheromones from female adult were main communication that impacted adult’s mating.3. The ultra-structure and distribution of sensillum on the cephalic appendages (antennae, mandible palp and labial palp) of S.populnea were observed with a scanning electron microscope. There are 9 types andl9 kinds of sensillum on the antennae, mandible palp and labial palp. The antennae contained 6 types and 14 kinds sensillum, including 5 kinds of sensillumchaeticas,2 kinds of sensillumtrichodeas,5 kinds of sensillabasiconicas,1 kind of finger sensilla,1 kind of sensillumcavitata-peg,1 kind of Hook shaped sensilla. The mandible palp and labial palp contained 3 types and 5 kinds of sensillum, including 3 kinds of sebsillum twig basiconcas,1 kind of sensillaplacodea,1 kind of sensillumcampaniformia.
