Soil salinization is the soluble salt accumulation in the soil that results serious declination of soil fertility. The declination of fertility causes barren land which leads to low crop yield. Saline-alkali wasteland is formed by soil salinization and secondary salinization. To study the characteristics of spatial distribution of saline-alkali wasteland could be used as reference for the amelioration and is significant for developing the reserved land with great potential. The study of amelioration measures of saline-alkali wasteland is important to reduce the stress of the lack of land resources. The study area was the saline-alkali wasteland located in Datong basin, Shanxi Province in northern China, which is located in Datong and Shuozhou and the basin area is 34433 ha. Because of the high water table of underground water, and the flat terrain causes water accumulating. Distribution of saline-alkali wasteland is mainly in flood plain and the first terrace of Sanggan river and Yang river. In this paper, the characteristics of spatial distribution of saline-alkali waste land were studied, and amelioration suggestions were made. The data used in this paper were: data of a total of 1729 sampling points, DEM, TM, Shanxi statistical yearbook 2013 and map of land use type. Topology, geology, hydrology and soil were studied to analyze natural characteristics of spatial distribution. Industrial structure, traffic and land use types were studied to analyze social characteristics of spatial distribution. An evaluation system of saline-alkali was established to evaluate the suitability of development of saline-alkali wasteland in Datong basin. Total salt of soil (TS), pH, soil organic matter (SOM), groundwater table and groundwater salinity were chosen as the quantitative indicators. Slope, soil texture, saline-alkali type, land use type and water resources as the qualitative indicators. After the index values were normalized, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used to calculate the weights of indicators. Final indexes were classified to six grades by method of comprehensive index. Area proportions of six grades are 12.10%, 16.07%,23.58%,21.67%,18.07% and 8.51%.With the combination of the characteristics of spatial distribution and the developing assessment results, three developing regions were divided, they are agriculture oriented region, forest oriented region and other region. In order to solve the problem of salt accumulation in two salt accumulation centers, agronomic measures and engineering measures should be used according to local conditions to ameliorate the condition of saline-alkali wasteland.
