Water is the lifeblood of agriculture, so water resources and the utilization level has become an important standard to evaluate sustainable development of a country. While China is a developing country, facing with water scarcity and lower use efficiency at the same time. Also water crisis has already had a bad influence on China’s economic and social sustainable development Recently, With the high development of technology, such as computer technology, wireless communication, and automatic control technology, an efficient, accurate and real-time automatic control system will become the development direction of automatic irrigation in the future.The existing irrigation techniques in China are still far behind of developed country. Using the wired control system has many defects, such as wiring complexity, higher cabling costs which not only make a difficult situation of practical application but also make it harder to expand. In this paper, an automatic irrigation system has been built based on ZigBee wireless communication platform. A mesh network which includes three types of equipment, one is wireless gateway node, one is wireless routing node and the other is wireless sensor nodes, is structured in this system. The system can get real-time data of the soil temperature and humidity by using the sensors in the monitor area. The data of soil temperature and humidity will be transformed to a PC through wireless sensor network based on the technology of ZigBee. The PC interface is designed by Lab VIEW software, and at the same time, according to the irrigation characteristics, the temperature and the humidity of the soil are regarded as input variables and the time of irrigation is regarded as output variable, the fuzzy control table was acquired by fuzzification of input variables, fuzzy inferential and de-fuzzification and is storaged into the PC. The irrigation time is gained according to the data of soil temperature and humidity, which can control the electromagnetic valve from irrigation equipment and achieve the target of precision automatic irrigation.Simultaneously, with the continuous development of science and technology, the technology of the meteorological observation is becoming better and better, the results of weather forecasting are getting more and more precise. So we can determine whether it needs to irrigate or not, according to the weather future rainfall probability, rainfall and other meteorological information, and it can further improve the water-saving efficiency and intelligence of the automatic irrigation systems.
