In the semi-arid Loess hilly region where there are insufficient water resources, the condition of soil water is the most important factor limiting plant growth.Therefore,it is very necessary to explore the dynamics of soil moisture of plantation for vegetation restoration and ecological construction in this area.This paper takes artificial Caragana korshinskii plantations as research objects,studied the response of soil moisture to rainfall,the influence of plant density on soil moisture and the effects of branch mulching on soil moisture.Main conclusions draw from this study are as follows:(1) The rainfall frequency decreased with increasing of rainfall. ≤10mm rainfall events were major.The contribution of large rainfall events(>30mm) to the total rainfall is the largest in the wet years.In the drought years,the contribution of ≤10mm rainfall events to the total rainfall is larger.(2) Rainfall infiltration with a lag and there is a certain positive correlation between the plantation density and lag.The infiltration depth of rainfall of wasteland is minimum,and there is a positive correlation between the plantation density and the infiltration depth of rainfall.(3) The first that reaching the soil water resource use limit is the 1.5 plot,the second is2.0 plot,the third is 0.5 plot,1.0 plot is the last.(4) In consideration of the sustainable management of artificial Caragana korshinskii plantations,the density of 1.0 plot is the most appropriate and the density is 24 plant/m2.(5) Regression analysis showed significant positive correlations between rainfall and recharge amounts in both mulch plots and control plots. Branch mulching increased the infiltration depth of rainfall, and the rate of rainwater harvesting was improved from 0.50to 0.70.
