Experience-oriented aquaculture management hinders its further development by its low efficiency. Recently, water quality detection technology has gradually matured. Therefore, the application of water quality detection technology in aquaculture is the general trend. In this paper, an intelligent monitoring system with the merits of low-cost for aquaculture is designed based on the researches on demands for aquaculture, monitoring systems for water quality and control systems for water quality. The system integrates the functions of data acquisition, wireless communication and automatic contro l, which enables it to collect the quality data accurately, display the information in time, and regulate the water-quality parameters on-line.The main results of this research include:(1) A low-cost and efficient data acquisition system is designed to collect the information of dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature. A set of protective devices for sensors is designed to take the probes out of water and wash them automatically, in which way, the problems of accuracy-reduction and life-shortening caused by their being immersed in water for a long time are solved.(2) A low-consumption, low-cost and efficient wireless communication system is designed based on ZigBee techniques, The system connects the sensor, the PLC and the master computer through the ZigBee node and transfers the data between each other through MODBUS protocol.(3) Both host and slave computers are designed in the intelligent monitoring system. In the host computers centered on servers, a interaction system is compiled by JAVA, which can analyze the received water-quality information and give instructions to the slave computers according to the calculation results. In the slave computers, a complete electric system is designed centered on PLC, in which the PLC can make the specified devices operated after receiving the instructions from the host computers, thus the control is accomplished.(4) A fuzzy controller suitable for intelligent monitoring system is designed, which combines the characteristics of control systems for water environmental factors, and finally, both MATLAB simulation and experiment are complemented aiming at the control of the dissolved oxygen, the results of which indicate that the designed fuzzy controller has more steady control and lower consumption compared with the traditional methods.
