Sex Addiction:Research In West And Investigation In China

This study conducted by two forms: literature research and qualitative research. The first part of this paper reviewed the study of sexual addiction in Western countries, the second part did a mini-interview analysis directed towards self-identify as sex addicts in Chinese context.30years ago, the west began to research about sexual addiction. In these studies, definition of sexual addiction have been debated for a long time, some scholars have advocated to make use of compulsive sexual behavior, or impulse control disorders instead of sexual addiction, even in these studies, some studies deny the existence of sexual addiction. Also, the characteristics and diagnostic criteria of sexual addiction have emerged. Many scholars have explored sexual addiction how work upon individual, family and social function. In term of causes, opportunities, trauma, attachment, masculinity, sex education, Internet, sexual orientation, ect are brought up for discussion. At the same time, treatments of sexual addiction have been developed, including individual therapy, group therapy, marriage and family therapy, and so on.It is lack of sexual addiction research in Chinese. In this study, we interview15self-identify sex addicts in open-ended form and analyze it. In the analysis of cause, we find early sexual experiences, exposure to sex information in adolescent, negative emotions are common mentioned. Amours and origin family only mentioned by some people. In cause, there is a difference with the west research, none of the interviewee is a multiple addicts. The study also analyze the impact of sexual addiction on interviewee. The most frequently mentioned is the negative impact to work, which based on let work as legitimate and sex dally. It denies the sex value. What is more, under Chinese culture, masturbation highly stigmatized also become an important source of psychological stress. Therefore, the harm of sexual addiction is a cultural construct, rather than loving sex itself bringing. We use label theory from the stigma of sexual attitudes and lack of support systems analyze sex addiction. Finally, this paper summarize the findings and proposes future expansion space on sexual addiction research.
