A Research On Characteristics Of Heroin Addicts' Addiction Motivation

This research on characteristics of heroin addicts' addiction motivation has both theoretical significance and empirical relevance. Based on the open survey and literature review, the author set out her own theoretical hypothesis and created the Scale of Heroin Addicts' addiction Motivation which was eventually applied with proven reliability and validity to a survey carried out among 651 heroin addicts in Chongqing from 6 organizations, who were divided into two groups and asked to answer the questionnaire on first-time addiction and re-addiction. The investigation of the above two target group focused on the respective group identity and the comparison of the addiction motivation. The main findings from this research can be concluded as follows:(1) The addiction motivation scale has good reliability and validity. By the method of factor analysis, 6 relative dimensions are included in the scale: social stress, conditions temptation, physical symptom, value idea, negative emotion, high sensation seeking.(2) The factors influencing the first-time addiction motivation are given priority in the following order: high sensation seeking, conditions temptation, negative emotion, physical symptom, value idea, social stress. The factors influencing the re-addiction motivation are given priority in the following order: negative emotion, conditions temptation, high sensation seeking, physical symptom, social stress, value idea. The factors influencing the general addiction motivation are given priority in the following order: negative emotion, conditions temptation, high sensation seeking, physical symptom, social stress, value idea.(3) Gender difference exists in the first-time addiction motivation. Male addicts consider more about the social stress and the high sensation seeking than female addicts.(4) Gender difference exists in the re-addiction motivation. Female addicts think highly of negative emotion while male addicts consider more about the high sensation seeking.(5) The significant differences exist between the first-time addiction motivation and the re-addiction motivation. Addicts think highly of value idea at their first-time addiction while consider more about negative emotion at their re-addiction.(6) The average age of first-time addiction was 23. 72.9 percent of addicts took less than 9 years' education .75.9 percent of the addicts had no jobs when they were addicted at first time, while the rate rose to 83.5 percent when they were re-addicted. There is no significant change about marriage and social stress after they abuse drug.(7) The addicts' action was serious. They used drug three times every day .The cost almost was 4000 yuan.(8) 66 percent of addicts hold a strong negation attitude to addiction. But 77 percent of them think they will abuse drug when they have it. Only 5 percent of them think they can control not to abuse drug.
