Patent foramen ovale that persists after birth in approximately1of4every adults, is a special type of atrial spetal defects. Recently, theinternational and domestic studies have shown an association betweenpatent foramen ovale and stroke,and have suggested a role for patentforamen ovale in stroke pathophysiology. The treatment of patent foramenovale include surgical therapy, drug therapy and transcathetertherapy.Patent foramen ovale closure can improve the prognosis of stroke.But further studies are necessary to determine the potential efficacy ofpatent foramen ovale closure devices in this setting and to identify thepatients who are most likely to benefit from patent foramen ovale closure. |
