Objective To evaluate the value of positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT) combined with serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the follow-up of colorectalcancer after operation. Methods In69patients which suspected recurrence or metastasis with surgical history ofcolorectal cancer,18F-FDG PET/CT was performed and serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)were detected within the same period.Compared with the final diagnosis, calculation of diagnosticaccuracy, sensitivity and specificity, and to evaluate the diagnostic value of combined use of bothexaminations. Results The cancer metastases were found in47of69patients with the surgical history ofcolorectal cancer.(22patients of them were comfired by pathological replacement when theyreceived second operation. Although, the other25cases didn`t receive operation, the exacerbationand death of them were comfired by many kinds of imageological examinations or follow-upvisit.)22patients didn`t have recurrence or metastasis after surgery.(They didn`t cured,or thechange of their conditionofapatient were not found in follow-up visit, or they became betterobviously.)49cases were positive, and20cases (7cases were true negative,and13cases werefalse negative) were negative in the results of serum CEA detection, the sensitivity and specificity of serum CEA detection for diagnosis of metastasis were85.1%and59.1%.45cases (43caseswere true positive,and2cases were false positive) were positive and24cases (20cases were truenegative,and4cases were false negative) were negative in the results of18F-FDG PET/CT. Thesensitivity and specificity of18F-FDG PET/CT detection for diagnosis of metastasis were91.5%and90.9%.According to combining two of the results above, the sensitivity and specificity were97.9%and95.4%.Conclusion PET/CT has a higher sensitivity and specificity than serum carcinoembryonicantigen(CEA)detection in assessment of postoperative matastasis of colorectal cancer, andserum carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)detection may be taken as a supplementary tool to18F-FDG PET/CT examination.Combined use of both examinations have high clinical value fordetecting the metastases of colorectal cancer.
