OBJECTIVE The clinical data of patients with ischemic stroke were collected, and PFO in these patients were screened. Plasma 5-HT and mean platelet volume (MPV) in these patients were investigated. The objective were exploring the clinical features and the factors associated with etiopathogenesis of cryptogenic stroke in patients with PFO.METHODS 248 patients with Ischemic stroke were prospectively selected in the first affiliated hospital of Guangxi Medical University between February 2013 and April 2014.99 patients were cryptogenic stroke according to their clinical date and C-TCD and TTE or C- TTE were used to screen PFO in the cryptogenic stroke patients. The clinical data in patients with PFO and CS were compared with the patients CS without PFO. Arterial plasma 5-HT of patients in two groups were measured by ELISA. MPV and other routine parameters such as PLT, PCT and PDW were measured with automatic blood cell analyzer in the groups of PFO with CS, PFO and the control.RESULTS 1.27 patients with PFO and 72 patients without PFO were checked in the 99 cryptogenic stroke patients with the screening method. Compared with the CS patients without PFO, PFO with CS patients were younger, had more proportion of women, lower proportion of hypertension, high HC Y and smoker, higher ratio of patients who had no common atherosclerosis risk factors and more incident of migraine (P<0.05).2.5-HT in arterial plasma in the PFO with CS patients was significantly higher than that in the CS without PFO patients (P<0.05). Furthermore, the level of 5-HT was reduced after PFO closure (P<0.05).3. Compared with control group, MPV was significantly increased in PFO with CS group and PFO group though there was no statistical difference between the two groups (P<0.05)CONCLUSION 1. PFO with CS patients were younger, had more ratio of women, high incident of migraine and less atherosclerosis risk factors.2. The level of 5-HT was higher in patients of PFO with CS and it decreased after PFO closure.3. MPV was significantly increased in patients of PFO with CS and PFO.4.5-HT and MPV may participate in the pathogenic mechanism of PFO-related cryptogenic stroke.
