BACKGROUND:A prospective study of comparing the functional outcome in parotid gland after partial superficial parotidectomy(PSP) and superficial parotidectomy(SP).METHODS:A prospective study, patients, diagnosed as Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA) of parotid gland post-operation by means of histo-pathology in Sichuan Cancer Hospital from 2012 to 2013, were enrolled in this research voluntarily. Patients were divided into PSP and SP groups. Uptaking Rate (UR) and Excretion Fraction (EF) of parotid gland can be quantified by salivary gland scintigraphy(SGS). Follow up by 3rd,6th and 12th month respectively after the surgery.RESULTS:Studies shows that remarkable dissimilarities in UR between operated and contralateral side of parotid gland in pre-operative stage(t=3.675; P value=0.011) in which operated side was higher than contralateral side, but there was no significant with EF(t=1.968; P value =.052).Both UR and EF of operated side in post-operative stage were lower than the pre-operative stage(P value<.05); Between PSP and SP groups, consequences were found after 3rd month of △UR(UR of contralateral side minus operated side) and 6th month of △EF(EF of contralateral side minus operated side),which △UR and △EF in PSP group is higher than CSP(P value<.05).CONCLUSION:SGS could be most preferable to diagnose PA of parotid gland pre-operative stage, and performing PSP is better than SP in conserving of parotid gland function.
