Duing to environmental factors such as electron radiation, environmental pollution and population aging, more and more people suffer skin pigment disorders so that skin whitening has become a research focus. What’s more, people are keen to natural skin care, It is commonly agreed that it’s more beneficial to use the natural plant for whitening in cosmetics. Camellia nitidissima Chi, as a traditional medicine in Guangxi, it has been recorded in many herbal literature. But for a long time, the development and utilization of Camellia nitidissima Chi is very insufficient, it’s mostly used as tea drinks. In order to investigate into the utilization of Camellia nitidissima Chi, the Camellia nitidissima Chi was extracted as the whitening additive in cosmetics. Based on this, major work is as follows:(1) The powder of Camellia nitidissima Chi extract has been obtained and the major active ingredients have been determined:the powder was obtained through boiling-water-extraction and freeze-drying; the content of the major active ingredients:flavonoids 12.99%, tea polysaccharide 7.39%, tea polyphenols 6.92% and saponins 5.40%.(2) Evaluating whitening effects by the antioxygenic property of Camellia nitidissima Chi extract:three kinds of antioxidant system were established, including Fe3+-TPTZ, DPPH* and NO2-. The experiment proved the oxidation resistance and anti-free-radical activity of Camellia nitidissima Chi extract.(3) Evaluating whitening effects of Camellia nitidissima Chi in the level of cell:mouse melanoma B16 cells were used. The results showed that Camellia nitidissima Chi extract can significantly inhibit the activity of tyrosinase and melanin synthesis, which is dose-dependent.(4) Preparation of the product:the final formula is determined on the basis of referring to the common dosage of base oil, auxiliary material and other parameters. The best formula is determined as:Camellia nitidissima Chi extract 0.5%, levo-vitamin C 0.3%, vitamin E 0.03%, total oil 0.04%, glycer 3%, Sodium pyrrolidonecarboxylate 5%, sodiumhyaluronate 0.1%, phenoxyethanol 0.3%, methylparaben 0.2%, Disodium EDTA 0.1%, emulsifier 3%, jojoba oil 10%, the rest component is deionized water.(5) The safety of the product was investigated preliminarily:Skin irritation test and skin toxicity of mice were adopted and carried out. It was showed that the product has no irritation and toxicity to skin.In summary, Camellia nitidissima Chi extract possesses antioxidant activity and inhibiting activity to tyrosinase and melanin synthesis of melanoma cell, it can be uesed as whitening functional components in skin care products. Its product are characterized by good sensory effects without skin irritation and skin toxicity, it is expected to become a new type of skin care product of whitening.
