ObjectiveFunctional gastrointestinal disorders include a range of clinical symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and so on. There isn’t any evidence of organic diseases of the digestive tract that can account for these symptoms. It’s common among both the ordinary children and those who have kidney disease. Comparing to medication and acupuncture, massage is a non-invasive and painless therapy without side effects. Based on the traditional massage technique, Wuzhichanyin therapy is more focused on the concept of healthcare for both the body and the spirit. Therefore, it’s mainly practiced on the abdomen, and most importantly on Shenque(Ren-8),the center of the umbilicus, which has the direct action on harmonizing the gastrointestinal tract and the spirit. So far, massage has been often applied in pure functional gastrointestinal disorders, other than those who have had organic diseases of other systems in the first place. This study is a randomized controlled trial. It compares Wuzhichanyin therapy with the traditional massage to observe and evaluate its therapeutic effect. It aims to explore a safe, reliable, effective and easily promoted method to regulate the digestive functions of the children.Methods50 pediatric patients with kidney disease and functional gastrointestinal disorders are accepted into the study and randomly divided into Wuzhichanyin therapy group and traditional massage group. There are 25 patients each group. Each patient is treated for 3 times, and the treatment outcomes will be measured according to the statistic analysis in order to compare the therapeutic effect of these two groups respectively.ResultThere was no significant difference about the gender, age and the quantities of the symptoms between traditional massage group (group A) and Wuzhichanyin group (group B) before the treatment. After treating two groups for 3 times, the remission rates for abdominal pain of group A and B were 47.1% and 93.8% respectively, having a significant difference (P<0.05). The remission rates of group A and B for diarrhea were 44.4% and 66.7%, constipation 40.0% and 62.5%, vomiting 33.3% and 63.6%, and they all had no significant differences (P>0.05). The total effective rate was summed by significant efficiency (group A:20%; group B:56%) and the effective rate (group A: 44%; group B:24%), and it had no significant difference between the two groups. However, the significant efficiency of group B was markedly higher than that of group A (P<0.05).ConclusionThis study shows when treating the pediatric patients with kidney disease combining functional gastrointestinal disorders, Wuzhichanyin therapy has a certain effect. And a further study is expected to make a more profound evaluation of the therapy.
