The sources of plant are rich in our country, it is one of the hot spots to look for natural antimicrobial substances directly from plant. Catalpa bungei C. A. Mey. is Bignoniaceae plants of the Catalpa, is widely distributed in China. Much of the research into C. bungei C. A. Mey has focused on breeding and cultivation, it were only used as timber and ornamental plants. This paper in order to the leaves of Catalpa bungei C. A. Mey. as object, extracted it’s antibacterial substances, provide theoretical basis for the comprehensive utilization of its non-wood parts. The main results are as follows:1. The antibacterial components of C. bungei C. A. Mey were extacted by ethol, Then it was extracted by different polarities of solvents, divided into four parts: petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, butanol and water parts. We investigated the antibacterial activity of them, the results showed that the ethyl acetate parts were the strongest part.2. The ethyl acetate were separated by silica gel column and gel column, got 86 components, and the antibacterial activity of isolates was also studied. We found the isolates showed best inhibitory effect to gram positive bacteria, and had a weak effect to gram negative bacteria and fungus. The No.33 sample had a significant effect on Bacillus subtilis, the diameter of inhibition zone was 17.3 mm.The parts which behave strong antibacterial activity were analyzed by thin-layer chromatography, found most of them contain flavonoids and terpenoids. They maybe the main active ingredient in C. bungei C. A. Mey..3. The results signaled that the leaves of C. bungei C. A. Mey. had inhibitory effect on gram positive bacteria, it can be used for further development in food and cosmetic industry. The above results provide an important basis for the comprehensive utilization of non-timber parts of C. bungei C. A. Mey..
