Objective To investigate the prevalence rates, epidemic characters and risk factors of overweight, obesityand abdominal obesity, explore the relations of them with obesity-related diseases among rural Kazakh andUyghur adults in Xinjiang, provide the scientific basis for preventing and controlling the obesity. Methods Questionnaire-based survey during the face to face interview, physical examination, fastingplasma glucose and blood lipids for8036samples(Kazakh:3920,Uighur:4116) were conducted according tostratified cluster random samplings in Kazakh and Uygur residents aged18years in Yili Xinyuan Countyand Kashi Jiashi County in Xinjiang. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS software (version17.0).Continuous variables were presented as means±standard deviations and analyzed usingt-test.Categorical variables were expressed as numbers or percentages and analyzed using the Chi-squaretest and trend test.Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyze odds ratio and its95percent of confidence interval of overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity in relation to related factorsafter adjusting for other potential confounders.Results1.The rates of Kazakh and Uighur rural residents overweight were27.6%and22.9%usingChinese BMI diagnostic criteria, the rates of men overweight were28.7%and24.1%,respectively.It was nosignificant difference in all age groups among two ethnic in men,the rates of women overweight were26.8%and21.7%,the rates of Kazak overweight of25~,55~,65~age group were higher thanUygur(P<0.05),the age group of35was contrary; The rates of two ethnic obesity were18.3%and7.6%,therates of men obesity were18.4%and6.9%,respectively.Women’s rates were18.2%and8.3%,in addition to18~,25~age group, the rest age groups obesity rates of the Kazakh men and women were significantlyhigher than Uighur(P<0.05);The rates of two ethnic abdominal obesity were60.0%and64.5%usingChinese WC diagnostic criteria. The rates of men were58.5%and45.4%,respectively,Kazakh’s abdominalobesity rate in each age group over25years were higher than Uighurs(P<0.01),the rates of womenabdominal obesity were61.0%and63.5%,the rates of Uygur in18~,35~age group were higher thanKazakh, the age group of65was contrary(P<0.001).2.In addition to the Kazakh obesity rates for males and females showed no significant difference, the two national prevalence of men overweight were higher than in women, the rates of obesity andabdominal obesity were higher in females(P<0.05).3.The prevalence of two ethnic overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity has increased with agetrend (P<0.01).4.Using BMI and WC criteria to judge two ethnic obesity, both male and female, the prevalencesof WC standard were higher than the prevalences of BMI criteria(P<0.001).5.For Kazakh population, ages increasing and eating bacon20kg or more annual will increasethe risk of overweight and obesity, and eating1-3eggs a week were the opposite;Uighur people have middleand high school/college education and eating≥4disks of vegetables every week can reduce the risk ofoccurrence of overweight and obesity, ages increasing and drinking more than10bowls of milk daily werecontrary.6.The overall prevalence rate of Kazakh rural residents with diabetes,hypertension,dyslipidemiawas5.9%,36.7%,31.9%,the Uighur’s corresponding rates were2.5%,26.5%,43.5%.The prevalence ofdiabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia in Kazakh and Uighur rural residents have increased with BMI andWC increasing trend(P<0.001);and obesity will increase the risk of three chronic diseases compared withnormal weight status.(three diseases with underweight group, dyslipidemia with abdominal obesity inKazakh and diabetic in Uygur were except).Conclusion1.The prevalence of overweight in Kazakh and Uighur rural residents were lower than thenational level, the rate of obesity in Kazakh was higher than the national level, but Uighur’s wascontrary. The prevalence of abdominal obesity in Kazakh and Uighur rural residents were higher than the national level.2.The prevalence of Kazakh and Uighur overweight in men women, but the rate of obesityand abdominal obesity were contrary;the prevalence of Kazakh obesity in men and women was higher thanUighur, the prevalence rates of the overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity in two ethnic have increasedwith age trend.3.The prevalence of abdominal obesity in Kazakh and Uighur rural residents was higherthan their same age group with the prevalence of generalized obesity.4.The risk factors for overweight and obesity in Kazakh population were age and baconintake, the protective factors was the frequency of eggs intake;the risk factors for overweight and obesity inUighur population were age and tea intake, the protective factors was education and the frequency ofvegetable intake.5.The prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia in Kazakh and Uighur ruralresidents have increased with BMI and WC increasing trend;and obesity will increase the risk of threechronic diseases.
