Objectives Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disease ofuncertain etiology. Many reasearches have reported the association between T. gondiiinfection and schizophrenia, but there is limit information in Guizhou province. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of T. gondii with the serological andmolecular methods and genotyping by Mn-PCR-RFLP. Methods A case–controlstudy was designed,112schizophrenia patients and101control subjects wereexamined for the presence of T.gondii IgG, IgM, CAg and529bp with ELISA andPCR techniques. Furthermore, applying Mn-PCR-RFLP to genotype. Results Theprevalence of IgG, IgM, CAg and529bp of Toxoplasma gondii in schizophreniapatients (21/112;22.3%) was significantly higher than the control subjects(8/101;7.9%)(OR=3.391;95%CI:1.420-8.097; P=0.0042).6schizophrenia samples werefound to be positive for the T.gondii529bp, but only one genotype were identified(Toxo DB#9) in6schizophrenia sapmles, which is reported previously as a mainlineage from pigs and cats in China. Conclusion Our study supports an associationbetween Toxoplasma gondii and schizophrenia. Chinese1(Toxo DB#9) may be amain lineage among schizophrenia paitents in GuiZhou province.
