ObjectiveTo retrospectively evaluate the safety, feasibility and efficacy of CT-guided percutaneous laser ablation of osteoid osteoma in21children.Materials and methodsFrom March2006to March2013,21children (male13, female8; age range2y6m~13y5m) with osteoid osteoma were treated with percutaneous laser ablation by CT guidence. Complications and exposure dose of procedure were recorded. Follow-up was performed to assess CT/MR and clinical outcome.ResultsAll children were treated successfully. No recurrences occurred by now. No major complication was observed during the treatment. Hyperthermia was observed in five patients after the procedure. Pain reduction was performed in all twelve children older than6-year. Eight children younger than6were relieved clearly and only one2-year-old child was not able to express his pain relief.13cases were followed up for2years, 12children obtained perfect moter functional rehabilitation, and1child was found vastus lateralis muscle atrophy one year later for reflex sympathetic dystroph. The DPL of CT scans during the procedure was range from37to49mGy*cm, meanly41.1mGy*cm, and the effective dose was range from0.59to0.78mSv, meanly0.66mSv.ConclusionPercutaneous laser ablation by CT guidance was an effective and safe minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of osteoid osteoma in children. It has higher success rates and lower recurrence rates than surgery and RF ablation.
