| High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a common sweetener, the main components are fructose and glucose. The metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of interrelated metabolic diseases, including obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, etc. MS can also lead to increase oxidative stress, which is like to be damaging to the cognitive ability. This paper explorered the effect of HFCS on laboratory animals’metabolism and behavior. The excessive intake of HFCS may increase the risks of MS and behavioral problems. The prevention and therapeutics of these diseases by use of functional foods also were rearched. In this paper, the content of fructose and glucose from HFCS were determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The fructose was56.8%, and the glucose was40.0%. The result met the requirement of F55HFCS according to the national standard.SD male rats were fed with different concentrations of fructose syrup water for16weeks. The effect of the HFCS on MS may be showed by the measurement of body weight, blood pressure, blood lipids and other indexes. Compared with normal group, the body weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), blood lipid, fasting insulin (FINS) were much higher in model groups, while the insulin sensitivity was decreased. Especially, the effect caused by15%and20%of fructose syrup water (fructose content6.13%and8.18%) was more obvious. The MS rats were divided into different groups:hawthorn group and its control group, tea group and its control group. The hawthorn group was gavage with hawthorn extrat, and the tea group was gavage with tea extrat. After4weeks, the body weight, FPB, SPB and the level of blood lipid were lower in the treatment group. To some extent, the hawthorn extrat and tea extract could be repair the damage caused by MS.The KM mice were devided to normal groups, model groups, hawthorn group and tea group. The model group was fed with15%HFCS water instead of the tap water, the hawthorn group and tea group were given HFCS water with hawthorn extract and tea extract respectively. After12weeks, because of the excessive intake of HFCS, the metabolic disorders were be found by measured correlated index in model group. Meanwhile, behavioral experiments confirmed memory, learning ability and athletic ability were decline. The SOD and CAT activity were significantly decreased, while the MDA level was increased. These results showed the oxidative stress was aggravated in model mice. Through giving the hawthorn extract and tea extract, it was effective to prevent against these oxidative damages.Above all, the excessive intake of HFCS could cause the metabolic and behavioral disorders. The metabolic syndrome could be treated and prevented by functional food. |
