Background: In recent years there has been great interest in the neuroendocrine neoplasms(NENs). Neuroendocrine carcinoids is a type of neuroendocrine neoplasms. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical, pathologic and prognostic characteristics of digestive system neuroendocrine carcinoids. Methods: 50 clinically, pathologically and histologically confirmed gastrointestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoids hospitalized in the First and Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University between January 2004 and July 2014, were enrolled into the study. The database include age, Gender, Primary tumor site, size of tumor, clinical symptoms, stage diagnostic procedures, etc. In order to find out the prognostic significance of clinical and pathological an analysis was made by using Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank.Results: From January 2004 to July 2014 the age of patients varied from 19 and 82 year period. The median age with the total number of patients was 55, with regards to women is 49 year, for men 59 year. The incidence of carcinoids location in this study were rectum, which accounts for 24 patients(48%), and others 26(56%) patients suffered by different kind of location of carcinoids(52%): 9(18%) cases located in appendix, 6(12%) cases in stomach, 5(10%) cases in duodenum, 3(6%) cases in ileum and 2(4%) cases in pancreas. The disease is manifested by pain in the epigastric region in 26 cases(52%), including dyspepsia in 10 cases(5%), diarrhea in 10 cases(5%) and constipation in 9 cases(18%). In 24 cases(48%) the disease were asymptomatic. The estimate mean survival was 5.28±0.39 years. Multifactor analysis showed young age, small tumor size were independent prognostic factor. Conclusion: This study indicated the most common site of gastrointestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoids was rectum, than other side of gastrointestinal tract, which include appendix, stomach, duodenum, ileum and pancreas. The most common clinical manifestation are epigastric pain, then dyspepsia and about half of the patients are asymptomatic. The young age and small size of carcinoids are relatively favorable.
