Background:Food is the substance of life which can provide human necessary natural nutrients. It has dual function of nourishing the human body and curing disease. Food, similar to drugs, mainly derived from plants and animals, has some biased characteristics, tastes, efficacy, and other functions. Compendium of Materia Medica, which is a herbal book collecting a large amount of food, recorded the species and their locations, which implied significant medicinal characteristics. This paper mainly mined the rule of property and effect of commonly used food contained in Compendium of Materia Medica.Objective:To study the modern authoritative account of 396 species of the food contained source, taste, channel, efficacy and indications in compendium of Materia Medica, sort out the rule of the common food and its drug properties, explore the regularity of drug properties of the food, analyze and summarize the characteristics of the food.Methods:Firstly, establish the species range of the food and commonly used food in compendium of Materia Medica. Secondly, to retrieve the data source in Chinese Materia Medica, input data food, supplement of medicinal parts, normative data and data preprocessing, sets up a food database and data collection. Finally, input data of frequency analysis and correlation analysis and finishing the results, summarize the rule of property of the food.Results:Through data collation and analysis of 654 food in Compendium of Materia Medica, plant food ranked the first place, animal food ranked the second place. The moderate was the most common property in four attributes of food, followed by the warm food. Hot food ranked the last. Sweet was the most common taste in five taste. The channel of food is the stomach, lung, spleen, liver and so on. In all 654 kinds of toxic food records only a small part, ginkgo, Chinese prickly ash, xanthate, nidus vespae, hot springs, evodia rutaecarpa, almonds, horse meat, wine etc. In high frequency effects of food and the range of indications, efficacy can be summarized for clearing away heat and toxic, replenishing qi to invigorate the spleen, Shengjinzhike and hemostasis swelling, attending often edema, thirst, thirst, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, upset hot.Conclusions:This paper discussed the regular laws of the medicinal properties, provided the literature foundation of food study and drawed many significantly clinical-guiding conclusion of commonly used food by exploring the source species, flavor and efficacy of food in Compendium of Materia Medica.
