Objective:The goal of this study was to. measure cerebral iron deposition using susceptibility-weighted imaging at 3.0T,evaluate the relationship between clinical symptoms and iron deposition, ferritin in people with Parkinson’s Disease.Methods:33 individuals with PD(male 16 female 17)were recruited in The First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University from March of 2013 to March of 2015 in the present study.PD was classified and divided in two groups by Hohen-Yahr. Early stage was defined by 1-2.5 level;middle-late stage was defined by 3~5 level. Select 25 individuals that age and gender matched as a control group. The phase images were processed region by region with hand-drawn areas. The regions evaluated included putamen(PUT),globus pallidus(GP),caudate nucleus(CN),red nucleus(RN),and substantia nigra(SN).Then we compared them in general situation, age, ferritin and corrected phase.Check the results to fit the normal distribution, then used analysis of variance and Wilcoxon rank sum test for measurement data statistical analysis. The significant differences on the data used correlation analysis with PD condition.Results:1.There were significant difference of the phase values of SN and GP between PD and the control(p<0.05), the phase values of CN in the middle-late stage PD were of significance with healthy group. While of PUT,RN and ferritin had no significant statistically difference(p>0.05).2.The phase values of SN were negatively related with UPDRS(r=-0.627, p<0.05),the phase values of GP were related with ferritin(r=0.512,p<0.05).Conclusion:1.Iron is crucial in the pathogenesis mechanism in PD.With the progression of the disease, iron deposition is gradually increased.Cerebral nuclei iron deposition maybe the independent risk factor.SWI provided a semi-quantitative method for iron deposition in PD,may be useful for early diagnosis of PD and evaluation of the degree of this disease.2.The iron deposition in SN was related with the PD syndromes and disease progress. The more iron deposition in SN,the severer of PD symptom.3.There were no relationship between PD and the control group in ferritin level, maybe cause of the local brain iron metabolism dysfunction.
