Objective: To review comprehensively the medical records of hospitalized patients who had been diagnosed with Lumbar Disc Herniation and treated by acupuncture in Acupuncture Department of Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Preliminarily analyze the characteristics of Lumbar Disc Herniation, and summarize the characteristics and regularity of the treatment for Lumbar Disc Herniation in our hospital, then objectively evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for the diagnosis and treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation in our hospital, so as to provide ideas for clinical treatment of this disease.Method: The form for collecting medical records was devised based on the purpose mentioned previously. Look up the record numbers of all the patients diagnosed of Lumbar Disc Herniation from January 2010 to December 2014 from the medical records database of the hospital, then check each record one after another according to the record numbers, and record the basic information, symptoms, signs, important laboratory and radiological findings related to the disease, treatment methods, curative effects and so on into the forms. All the data was input to the computer separately and SPSS 19.0 was used for the statistics and analysis of the information.Result: 1.329 cases were collected in the study. The disease has little to do with gender, and the age of onset was almost 40~79 years old, according for 82.37%. Most of the cases happened in summer and autumn, according for57.75%. 2. Fatigue, cold, and trauma were the main pathogenesis or aggravating factors of this disease. 3. The name of the disease in TCM is mainly arthralgia, according for 59.57%. The syndrome types in TCM of the Lumbar Disc Herniation patients were mainly “qi stagnation with blood stasis” and “blockage of collaterals due to cold-dampness”, separately according for 42.25% and 22.49%. 4. All patients were treated by combination of acupuncture, TDP and electroacupuncture; the selection of points was mainly Jiaji and Back-shu of corresponding lumbar lesions, combined with the distal acupoints. 5. The majority of patients accepted application of acupoint injection, moxibustion, cupping, oral medicine or other therapies. 6. More than half of the lumbar disc herniation patients in this retrospective analysis could be significantly improved within three weeks by acupuncture treatment.Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment for peripheral Lumbar Disc Herniation patients has good efficacy. Combination of acupuncture, other external treatment therapies and oral medicine can further improve the efficacy and shorten the treatment course for lumbar disc herniation. However, the evaluation system of various therapies is still lack of standardization, and it is difficult to review the contrast between the results of the retrospective studies.
