Objective: According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine and the pharmacodynamic parameters about osteoporosis, a prescription which has reasonable formulas and better curative effects for preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis can be gained. Methods: To study the prescription by researching and analyzing a large number of TCML information and patent literatures at home and abroad on osteoporosis, following the traditional Chinese medicine theory as guidance to permit the election party and according to the formula of traditional Chinese medicine such as monarch, minister, assistant and drug compatibility. After ovariectomizing, the animals were divided into sham group, model control group, positive control group, turmeric group and group without turmeric. The treatments were given via daily oral feeding for 90 days. Then, the weight, the index of uterus and internal organs, the contents of OPG and RANKL in serum, femur length and bone microstructure and histomorphometry were measured. Results:(1) Prescription screening results: the anti-postmenopausal osteoporosis prescription composition can be determinated preliminarily as drynaria, astragalus, turmeric, yam, Poria, arrowroot and Yiyiren. Through the study of decomposed recipe, we have got the prescription without turmeric.(2) Pharmacodynamic test results: Compared with model control group, two difficult prescriptions can vary degrees to slow weight gain of rats; The level of osteoprotegerin increased, and the level of RANKL decreased(P<0.01); both can promote the growth of the femur and delay the destruction of trabecular structure with getting the neatly arranged bone trabecula, increasing trabecular thickness, besides, redusing the trabecular separation and decreasing the free ends of the trabecular bone. They can inhibit bone resorption according to increasing the number of osteoblasts, at the same time, reducing the number of osteoclasts. And the both prescriptions have no significant influence on internal organs in ovariectomized rats(P>0.05).The efficacy of turmeric prescription is superior to prescription without that. Conclusion: The anti-postmenopausal osteoporosis prescription of turmeric is determined which with reasonable combination and significant curative effect.
