Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of self-expandable metallic stent(SEMS) designed for colorectal used in the palliative treatment of malignant colorectal obstruction. Methods:Malignant colorectal obstructive patients who underwent SEMS placement for palliation at the Fujian Medical University Union Hospital from July 2010 to March 2014 were enrolled in the study. The clinical data of 49 patients were retrospectively analysed. To observe and analyze the site of obstruction, occlusive syndrome, number of stents, technical success rate, clinical success rate, complication rates(occlusion, migration,perforation,hematochezia,bacteremia/fever,tenesmus), reintervention or not, survival time after stent placement. Results:Stents were placed successfully in 42 of 49 patients.Technical success rates were 85.6%,with 95% CI 73%-94%.Clinical success rates were 97.6%,with 95% CI 87%-100%.Of 42 patients who placed stent successfully, ten patients(23.8%) had main complications including occlusion(eight patients,19.0%),perforation(two patients, 4.1%).There were no migration occured. After 6 months, the rates of clinical success was 88.1% with 95% CI 74%-96%.The median overall survival was 18 months(95% CI, 8.053-27.947).Twenty four patients(70.6%) were free of obstruction from implantation until death. Conclusion: Self-expandable metallic stents used in the palliative treatment of malignant colorectal obstruction are relatively safe and effective.
