Objective:As is known, ciliary neurotrophic factor(CNTF) plays a role in suppressing appetite, reducing weight and improving insulin resistance. This research aimed to explorer the relationship between human serum ciliary neurotrophic factor and type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods:71 patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus were collected in Wuxi People’s Hospital from March 2015 to August 2015, which were separated three groups—DM group(n=27), DR group(n=24), and DPN group(n=20). 20 cases of the health examination were the control group. General information was gathered including age, gender, diabetic course, height, weight and waistline. Biochemistry, C-peptide and glycosylated hemoglobin were tested by clinical laboratory and serum CNTF level was tested by ELISA. The measurement data are expressed as the mean ± standard error of the mean. The differences between groups were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Dunnett t test. Correlation analysis was performed using the Pearson test and multiple linear regression analysis. P value of <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.Results:(1) There were no significant differences in gender, age, height, weight, body mass index and waistline between groups. Diabetic course, fasting blood glucose, HbA1 c, LDL-C in the group of DR and DPN were higher than the DM group. The level of estimated glomerular filtration rate in DR group was 86.38±20.59ml/min, which was remarkable lower compared to DM and DPN group. Compared with the normal group, serum CNTF in three groups with diabetes mellitus was distinctly reduced.(2) Diabetes mellitus complicated with retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy negatively correlated with serum CNTF by Pearson correlation analysis(r=-0.634, P <0.001).(3) Using the multiple linear regression analysis, we get the simulation of multiple linear regression equation: Y=116.471-7.295X1-0.598X2-1.791X3+ 6.626X4-4.265X5(Y=CNTF, X1=diabetic complication, X2= diabetic course, X3=BMI, X4=TG, X5=HDL-C.Conclusions:The level of serum CNTF was significant lower in diabetic patients, and it is negatively correlated with diabetic complications. BMI and lipid metabolism were also correlated with CNTF.
