Objective:To observe the efficiency of co-transplantation of umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells and hematopoietic stem cells.Methods:28 patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cells transplantation (HSCT) were enrolled in our study. They were divided into 2 groups. (15 patients in MSC group, and 13 patients in non-MSC group) 1×107 of MSCs were transplanted additional to pre-exiting immune suppressing drugs in MSC group. Patients in non-MSC group received immune suppressing drugs alone. Results:We observed that co-transplantation of UCMSC and hematopoietic stem cells significantly decreased the incidence of II-IV acute GVHD. (1 of 15 patients in UCMSC group and 6 of 13 patients in non-UCMSCs group, P=0.016) Furthermore, we did not observe any advantages in hematopoietic recovery. Conclusions:Therefore, with an appropriate dosage, timing, and setting, UCMSCs have the potential to ameliorate the clinical symptoms of GVHD.
