A "primary nursing" model was used in most of Chinese hospitals with a high level of medical standards. This work pattern of nursing practice required lots of writing tasks, and took up more nursing staff and a large proportion of their working time. Therefore, managers of the hospitals hoped to use the mobile nursing information systems to reduce the workload of nurses, improve their work efficiency and achieve the purpose of returning the nurse to the patient, so as to improve the quality of patient care and patient satisfaction. Additionally, managers also hoped to use the system to achieve the closed loop ofprescription, thereby improving the medical safety of hospitalized patients. However, the use of mobile technology in the medical field was still in the emerging stage currently. There was not yet a scientific method to evaluate and analyze the real effect of mobile technologies. This not only led to the lack of scientific basis of evaluationg performance of nurses and improving needs, but also hindered the rapid development of mobile nursing information systems. Therefore, it naturally became an urgent need to conduct research on the work pattern of nursing practice and the impact of mobile technology on nursing practice pattern in China. To solve the above problems, this paper summarized the related research methods in the field of biomedical engineering and social medicine. Then conducted research on the work pattern of nursing practice before and after the introduction of mobile technology and draw conclusions. Details are as follows:(?) Reviewed current research methods for work pattern of Nursing practice, analyzed the advantages and limitations of each method, then detived the most suitable research method for this study, which combined qualitative and quantitative research and named time-motion observation study;(?) Developed a classification system of nursing work activities in Chinese hospitals, which was needed during the research procedure of nursing work pattern, using document review, focus group discussions and observation methods.(?) Developed a data collection tool, which was used during the research procedure, according to the ready list of the classification system of nursing work activities.(?) Conducted observational studies before the introduction of the mobile technology by using time-motion observational method. It firstly provided an accurate and complete model of nursing work activities within eight hours of working shift in a Class 3A hospital in China, and provided baseline data to assess the impact of the mobile technology on the work pattern of nursing practice.(?) Conducted observational studies after the introduction of the mobile technology by using time-motion observational method, and analyzed the impact of the mobile technology on the work pattern of nursing practice. It provided an effective evidence to manage nursing care works and important data support for the development of mobile nursing information systems.
