The Relationship Between Lipoprotein (a) Level And The Severity Of Coronary Atherosclerosis

Objective:Lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) level is a risk factor for ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease. However, few data are available concerning the relationship between Lp(a) level and severity of coronary atherosclerosis. We hypothesized in this study that Lp(a) level is a marker of severity of coronary atherosclerosis, to explore the relationship between Lp(a) level and severity of coronary atherosclerosisMethod:Select 662 patients who had been admitted into Run Run Shaw Hospital affiliated of zhejiang university to have coronary angiography. The following factors were recorded:age, gender, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, body mass index, and family history of coronary artery disease, Lp(a), LDL, HDL, TC, TG, homocysteine, creatinine, CRP. Then evaluate the severity of coronary atherosclerosis through coronary angiography, emphasis at the relationship between Lp(a) level and severity of coronary atherosclerosis.Result:Age, gender, BMI, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, family history of coronary artery disease, Lp(a), Lp(a)>30mg/dL, CRP were significant predictors of coronary atherosclerosis. There was a positive and significant correlation between the Lp(a) levels and the score of severity of coronary atherosclerosis (p=0.000). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that Lp(a) was an independent predictor of severity of thoracic aortic atherosclerosis(p=0.000).Conclusion:This study indicates a positive and significant correlation between the Lp(a) level and the coronary atherosclerosis. It also indicates that serum Lp(a) level is an independent marker of severity of coronary atherosclerosis.
