Objiective: Compare the advantages and disadvantages of procalcitonin(PCT) and common inflammatory indicators, explore the value of joint platelet count(PLT) to predict the bloodstream infections, and determine its diagnostic threshold specificity and sensitivity. Methods: Blood cultures and PCT levels form 644 patients with suspected sepsis collected form 2013 to 2015 were analyzed, 76 cases of blood culture positive group(sepsis), and compared with 298 cases of patients with non- sepsis group(infection group) and 100 cases of healthy group(control group) of procalcitonin(PCT), white blood cells(WBC), neutral grain ratio(NEU), C reactive protein(CRP) and PLT(platelet count) and ESR(blood sedimentation) level, the above-mentioned six indexes of three groups of patients were statistically analyzed. At the same time the patients blood culture positive for gram-positive bacteria(G +) group, the group of gram-negative bacteria(G-), to detect the serum PCT, PLT result, evaluation of PCT in blood culture and the value of the diagnosis of bacterial species. Results: Biochemical parameters of sepsis group had difference with those of control group(P<0.01),Compared with infection group,PLT, PCT, CRP and ESR level had statistical significance(P<0.01).The WBC and NEU had no statistical significance(P>0.05);Infected patients PCT, CRP, WBC, NEU and ESR were statistically significant compared with control group(P < 0.01), but no significant difference were observed in the PLT(P > 0.05). Comparison between the G- and G + group serum PCT and PLT difference was statistically significant. Conclusions: PCT in sepsis indicators better sensitivity and specificity, PCT can joint PLT guide blood culture results.
