Objective: To investigate possible changes of peripheral mi R-1202 levels in individuals with bipolar disorder and major depression disorder during the major depressive episode. Methods: Twenty patients with bipolar depression disorder(BDD) and nineteen patients with major depression disorder(MDD) in acute episode diagnosed according to DSM-5 criteria and twenty healthy normal controls(NC) were recruited. All subjects measured plasma mi R-1202 levels using stem-loop RT-PCR method. Results: 1. After adjusted for age and BMI by the analysis of covariance, compared with NC group, plasma mi R-1202 levels were increased in BDD group and MDD group [(0.04±0.1) vs.(-0.8±0.1) vs.(-1.3±0.1), F=37.336, P<0.001] and there was also significant difference between BDD group and MDD group(mean difference =0.800, P<0.001). 2. By multivariate linear regression analysis, we found that mi R-1202 levels and HAMA scores were negatively correlated to men patients with major depressive episode(F = 29.897, B =-0.322, t =-5.468, P = 0.001), but there was a negative correlation in women patients between plasma mi R-1202 levels and BMI(F = 23.863, B =-0.199, t =-4.885, P <0.001). 3. we discovered that the main factors influencing the quantity of mi R- 1202 expression also each were not identical in different types of patients with major depressive episode. In BDD group, mi R-1202 was only related to gender(F = 7.778, B = 0.362, t = 2.789, P =0.012), but it was negatively correlated to BMI scores in MDD group(F = 14.965, B =-0.170, t =- 3.868, P = 0.001). 4. No matter what type of depression the group was, the amount of plasma mi R- 1202 level was significantly increased in women than normal group[(BDD group) vs.(MDD group) vs.(NC group) =(0.3±0.3) vs.(-0.7±0.5) vs.(-1.4±0.6), F=42.192,P<0.001]. However, the difference of mi R-1202 levels between MDD group and NC group was not significant in male patients. 5. Compared with MDD group, BDD group is with earlier age of onset of illness, frequent episodes and severe cognitive dysfunction. Conclusion: 1. Plasma mi R- 1202 levels were apparent increased in patient with bipolar depression disorder and major depression disorder. Plasma mi R-1202 may not be considered as a potential peripheral marker that can discriminate between BDD and MDD. 2. There were gender differences in plasma mi R- 1202 levels of bipolar depressive disorder and major depressive disorder, especially women in patients with bipolar disorder were more apparent.
