Bei Qiong was born in1314and died in1379. He was an outstanding poetduring the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty. At the late Yuan, he lived in seclusionand teached many students. At the early Ming, he did in response to write the YuanHistory, and served as the Zhejiang provincial official, the Imperial AcademyAssistant and the Zhongdu Imperial Academy in succession. Bei Qiong, Nie Xuanand Zhang Meihe were praised as The Three Assistants in Imperial Academy at theearly Ming. Bei Qiong studied from Yang Weizhen, but can took his length to hisshort. Bei Qiong’s poetic style was nature and gentle. Zhu Yizun said his poem canlead the period.Under the influence of Yang Weizhen, Bei qiong praised Tang andunderestimated Song. He thought the peak period of poetry appeared in the TangDynasty and respected Li Bai and Du Fu. In Bei qiong’s opinion, writing was notimitating but showing the individuality. He advocated culturing the spirit to helpwrting. This “Yang Qi Theory” was inherited from Mencius, Han Yu and Su Zhe.Bei Qiong’s poetry was abundant in content. There were painting and calligraphyinscriptions, landscape poetry and so on. His poem style was natural and fresh. Heused proverbs and allusion, fable and fairy tale cleverly. The usage of metaphor andparallelism made the poems very vivid.
