This paper aimed to delineate the cognitive psychological process duringinterpreting from English (SL) to Chinese (TL) for the novices who werepostgraduates from College of Foreign Studies.40subjects were randomly dividedinto two groups: control group/radio group and experiment group/video group. Bothgroups interpreted segments of a concrete topic news and an abstract topic news. Thecontrol group only listened to the news with radios while the experiment grouplistened and watched the news with videos. Eventually, datasets were collected andanalysed for concrete-radio, concrete-video, abstract-radio and abstract-video. Theresults demonstrated that novices with relatively high English proficiency as aforeign language (a) interpreted concrete topic news better than the abstract one;(b)had better performance if the input was showed up with sounds and images together.Theses results were consistent with concrete effect and code additive principle of theDual Coding Theory. In the end, the author tentatively presented the mentalinformation processing model during interpreting as an extension of DCT tobilingual memory and cognition.
