This article investigates the effect of video media upon listeningcomprehension of second language learners. The main questions addressed are: dovideo media have a positive or negative effect on the whole? Does this effect varywith different learners? Does this effect vary with different types of questions? Toanswer these questions, a quantitative experiment has been carried out after a pre-textand followed by a qualitative analysis and a questionnaire. Authentic data have beenanalyzed by T-test and descriptive statistics to see whether there are significantdifferences between different testing groups. Results show that video media, althoughboth useful and harmful to listening, plays a positive role in second language listeningcomprehension in general. They also demonstrate that low proficient students benefitmore than high proficient students and direct questions benefit more than indirectquestions. Implications for both pedagogical and learning purpose are discussedspecially as to what kind of video media should be used, who should use them andhow to use them. In the conclusion, limitations of this research are discussed andsuggestions are made for future researches.
