An Adaptivw Study Of Linguostoc Meme In Fictional Dialogue

The linguistic significance of fictional dialogue study has been studied at length, thoughoften only in view of speech comprehension and strategy, rather than in terms of the processesof use, such as the transmission processes of language as a linguistic meme in communication.In light of this phenomenon, this thesis attempts to apply the conceptual framework ofmemetic-adaptation as the theoretical framework for the analysis of the importance oflinguistic meme’s adaptability in the internal and external processes of its transmission.Namely, the replication processes of linguistic meme and influencing factors in its intrinsictransmission life-cycle as well as the processes of how host chooses high adaptability specificlinguistic memes over other memes in certain contextual correlates, such as mental world,social world and physical world to achieve communicative goals in the communicativeenvironment.According to the definition of meme, the research first selects dialogues which manifestthe linguistic meme most as the object of study to analyze the processes of linguistic memes’replication and transmission, and the factors that influence meme’s survivability. Theninvestigate the adaptability of linguistic meme’s dynamic transmission processes in externalcommunicative environment through a certain amount of data analysis. Language is the mostmanifested vehicle of a meme in people’s daily social interaction. Potential host builds up akind of mental dimension to better comprehend and reconstruct the linguistic meme bydecoding the language which contains meme information. After successful decoding of thememe information, the new meme infects the host and becomes a part of the cognitivestructure of him. And then the host recodes the meme to choose the optimal one to make surethat the one adapted to contextual correlates. Finally, meme successfully transmitted to otherpossible host, at the same time the host ultimately attain the communicative goals. In order tosurvive, linguistic meme’s transmission in the communicative environment should make adynamic adaptation to the instinct replication mechanism and the context of the situation. The details will be discussed in the backbone of the thesis.The present research is a tentatively qualitative study on linguistic memes frommemetic-adaptation perspective. Hope this research could make a moderate contribution toexplain the importance of meme adaptability in the internal and external processes of itstransmission.
