A Report On The E-C Translation Of When Death Becomes Life (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

With the rapid development of medical technology,various advanced medical technologies are changing people’s lives,and biographical texts of a medical background have gradually attracted people’s attention.This translation practice is an E-C translation of the fifth chapter of When Death Becomes Life: Notes of a Transplant Surgeon published by Harper Collins,USA.This book records the clinical experience of a surgeon and relevant historical facts in the field of kidney transplantation.In the light of the scientific and literary characteristics,the Adaptation Theory is applied to the case analysis of this translation.This report analyzes the cases in this translation practice from the angle of the contextual correlates of adaptability in Adaptation Theory.After an introduction to the background,the source text,the pre-translation preparation and translation process of this translation practice,this report makes a detailed analysis of the typical examples based on the contextual correlates of adaptability at the lexical,the syntactic level and discourse level,and discusses the strategies and methods for the translation of medical biography texts.It is found that the translators should make linguistic choices based on the communicative context and linguistic context,and flexibly adopt the translation strategy of free translation and such techniques as amplification,conversion,omission and other skills to make the target text accurately and appropriately convey the intended meaning of source text and generate the same contexts.In terms of the explanatory part of this type of text,the translator should stress on the analysis of the linguistic context to guarantee the accuracy of the translation.As for the narrative part,the author should put an emphasis on the analysis of the communicative context for the faithful reproduction of the mental world,social world and physical world in the target text.
