The three principles of Gadamer is the core thought of modern hermeneutics. Which plays an important role in the events of retranslation in nowadays. The definition of the three principles are:the first one,"historicity of understandings", Gadamer’s three principles of the first one historical interpretation which "shows that human’s existence are historical. Man’s life is only a short period of the history. Understanding, as the way of being of human life, is also historical due to "man’s finite, historical mode of being"(Gadamer,1999,246), the retranslations of different years by different translators are impacted by the historical factors, so the understanding of the retranslations are distinct as well; and the second one,"fusion of horizons", Gadamer thinks that horizon between readers and interpreters are not closed or dependent, it is a space for understanding throughout ages. Translators in different ages will get the different horizons of understanding; the third one is "effective history", translators take his historical situation as their elements to understand a text in their familiar situation, that is to say, different translations will play different roles in their times. Retranslation, first is understanding of the same age but different translators, the second is the same literature but different translators in different time, and the later always be researched in recent years. At Present, we can find nearly more than20Chinese versions of this novel since it was introduced into China, the first translation version was translated by Eileen Chang, and other versions such as versions translated by Hai Guan(1960), Huang Yuanshen(2007), to the lattest one Cheng Junyi’s version(2012), which are also playing an important role in the field of literal retranslation. Many scholars’s analysis on The Old Man and the Sea always are staying on one versions but no analysis about the newest version somehow. This thesis will take Gadamer’s three principles as the theoretical instruction, and does an analysis on the retranslation events of The Old Man and the Sea. Firstly, this paper will discuss the introduction of hermeneutics, the theory of hermeneutics, retranslation and its current situation, and some content of The Old Man and the Sea. Then, this paper will illustrates the three principles of Gadamer’s hermeneutics in details. And at last, form Eileen Chang’retranslation work was finished in1955to Cheng Junyi’version on the year of2012, the comparative analysis of the two versions will be discussed in details. With the three principles of Gadamer’s hermeneutics, the part will be the core part and the influences of the two version will show the historical effect.
