Sumi Jo (1962) is now the most famous Asian soprano vocalist. After her debutas Gilda in Verdi’s version of Rigoletto at the Opera House of Comunale GiuseppeVerdi in1986, she successfully performed a lot of soprano characters in manywell known operas from the Baroque to the latter years of the Romantic Period. Besides,she specializes in performing the works of religious stylistic chamber music fromCaccini to Faure and Gounod. After the year2000, she also tried musicals and popsongs. In addition to the traditional opera houses and music halls, she also shows up inmany music festivals and square music concerts. Whatever the styles of the works are,she is able to perfectly perform with ease. And this unique ‘crossover’ singing talentenables her to develop a school of her own in the field of classical music. Soresearching into her singing art makes special sense in the studies of the artistic styles ofthe world famous vocalists in the mid and late19s.The uniqueness of this essay is that in stead of a general study on Sumi Jo, thisessay, based on the existing studies, does through analyses on the unique artistic style ofSumi Jo, from the aspects of the artistic cause of formation of her singing, her soundproduction techniques, and her performing styles, through accumulating and analyzingaudiovisual materials,literatures and scores. Through research this essay holds the ideathat Sumi Jo is good at opera characters of coloratura soprano from all periods and theperformance of vocal music masterpieces. She has splendid breath control and weakvoice control ability, and is capable of flexible tone color and volume changing. Shedares to try various artistic forms of singing, and is able to adjust her singing conditionand artistic expression ways to the musicals and pop songs she performs. As a classicalmusician, she is a model of modern sopranos with unique characters, open musicattitudes and artistic mind. Deep researches into Sumi Jo’s singing art have realisticmeaning as well as enlightening effects to the vocal music learners, especially theChinese learners who are also from Asia.
