Musical Characteristics And Artistic Performance Of Piano Sonata In F Major By Dmitry Kabalevsky

Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky is a well-known composer and music educator from theformer Soviet Union in the20th century. Among his great piano works, Piano Sonata in Fmajor is an excellent piece, and plays an important role in the history of Russian musicliterature. However, in China, academic studies on Kabalevsky’s piano sonata are stillincomplete. Kabalevsky’s Piano Sonata No.3has the representative composing style ofRussian Piano School. This paper is aimed to, through combing with personal learningexperience on Kabalevsky’s piano sonata, analysis its text structure and performance details,demonstrate its musical characteristics, summarize its successful creation experience, anddiscuss its invaluable reference significance. The paper therefore falls into three parts:The first part is an introduction on bibliography of Kabalevsky and the creationbackground of Piano Sonata in F major. The musical characteristics is analysised in terms ofmusic form, harmony, melody, as well as rhythm and meter. The conventionality andmodernity is discussed by comparing its composing principle with that of classical sonatas.And the artistic expression is discussed by comparing it with works from other composersduring the same period.The second part demonstrates its performance details regarding key touching, pedaling,playing method and tempo arrangement in each movement. As a good interpretation of a workpiece is vital for its value being properly disclosed, so as to renders the audience toacknowledge the value.The third part discusses the creation features of Kabalevsky’s music against our nationalpiano music, and further analysises its reference significance.
