Albato Ginastera, born in Buenos Aires, 1916 and decreased in Geneva, 1983, is considered one of the three most important Latin American composers in 20 th century, side by side with Brazilian composer Vera Roberts and Mexican composer Carlos Chavez. He created a considerable amount of works of various types and themes. The three piano sonatas of his are his most important works, well presenting his style in his last two creating periods of the total three. He insisted on using ethnic language and vocabulary, aimed at pushing localized musical cultures, and succeeded in craftily combining traditions with contemporary, earning himself a unique and original spot among contemporary composers. Ginastera played a significant role in promoting Argentine nationalist music.The essay is based on the analysis of Ginastera’s the First Sonata for the Piano(his 22 nd work, 1952), and gives a detailed analytic study on various aspects of the sonata, such as harmony, tonality, tempo, polyphony, musical structure, ethnic styles, etc. Through the composition analysis, the essay shows multiple performing forms of musical works of pantonality, which stands between tonality and atonality. The author puts his personal performing experiences into the studying process, hoping to achieve full-scaled explanation and understanding of the Piano sonata No.1, especially of its performance skills, playing styles and pedal using.
