Richard Milhouse Nixon is one of the controversial President in Americanhistory. His career reflect the microcosm of the serious conflict between the Americanliberalism and conservatism after World War II. The Liberals dominated the Americanpolitics for a long time since the New Deal. The Federal Government strengthenintervention in the economy, deficit finance and large-scale social welfare program arepolitical characteristics of this period. The Nixon’s victory, in1968, is a notablelandmark in the development of the conservatism. Since he became President,America’s domestic policy gradually tilted to conservative. This paper will analyzeNixon’s domestic policy within the context of the rise of conservatism and Americanturbulent domestic environment in1960s-1970s, in order to discuss the consequenceand influence of his domestic policy.Chapter I, The chapter narrates the rise of the conservatism and its complexcomponents after World War II, and discusses the political atmosphere beforePresident Nixon in America.Chapter II, This chaper regards New Federalism as the object and analyzes theconnotation and the implementation effect of New Federalism.Chapter III, From an economic point of view, this chaper analyzes Nixon’sconservative political position, and discusses the background, connotation and failureof New Economic Policy.Chapter IV, This chaper serves as an introduction to Nixon’s civil rights andwelfare policy and analyzes how Nixon implementing his conservative valuesbetween reality and faith.Nixon had been elected President when liberalism was confronted bypredicament in the period of domestic turmoil of the United States. As a Conservative,how to seek balance between personal initiative and social justice and how to maintain the stability of American society was one of the important problems whichhe had faced. Although many policies ultimately failed during his presidency, itoffered a useful experience and lesson for the successors and helped conservatismsweeping away the competition in the Reagan-era.
