The development of translation theory has experienced from the “linguistic turn” to the “cultural turn”, thenthe interdisciplinary research trend of diversified multiple points of view following. Traditional linguisticperspective of translation studies is sometimes limited to language symbols equivalence, and ignores the discourseof literature, so it couldn’t explain the inner problems in literary discourse. And cultural perspective of translationstudies tends to ignore the question of translation in the language and text inside. Because of that, in21st century, the phenomenon of “to return to linguistics” has appeared (Snell-Hornby,2006:151). Cognitive stylistics is across-discipline of cognitive linguistics and stylistics, which combines traditional stylistics with cognitive science.Boase-Beier thinks that the literary text is the most suitable type for cognitive stylistics research, at the sametime, she also points out that the poem is a good form of literature, the research of poetry translation is the best wayto evaluate literary translation, the translation should reproduce the stylistics effects in the original, which alsocalled “signs of literariness”. They are reflected through the use of stylistic devices.“Foregrounding” is somewherethe stylistics approaches centralized, it is the core which the translators and translation researchers should payattention to, because “foregrounding” can draw the readers’ attention to the text, and arouse their psychologicalfeelings through cognitive efforts. Meanwhile, she thinks that the translation work is a “conceptual blend” whichleads the translation study into a new cognitive field.HLM is one of the four great classics in China. No matter from the perspective of artistic value or literaryachievement, it reached the peak of the Chinese classical literature. JLPs in HLM indicate the destiny of the femalecharacters in the novel. This research selects two versions of Yang Xianyi and Hawkes, and applies two dimensionsof cognitive stylistics:“foregrounding” and “conceptual blend” to do comparative study, in order to explore thecognitive process of the translator and find out which version can better reproduce the effect of making the reader to“search for the meaning”.
