Cognitive stylistics is an emerging discipline integrating linguistics, literature and cognitive science and has been gaining increasing attention of related scholars.Traditional stylistics attaches great significance to the descriptive analysis of linguistics features in the text in detail. The cognitive research of language emphasizes the systemic analysis of the cognitive structure and cognitive process behind the generation and reception of language, while cognitive stylistics combines the study of the two.Drama is an unique literary genre, and its translation is characterized by ‘duality'.Cognitive stylistics has a strong explanatory power for translation studies.Drama translation is regarded as one of the most complicated translation studies and received, relatively speaking, less attention.Under the framework of cognitive stylistics, translation study emphasizes the analysis of the cognitive structure and cognitive process of the translator's translation choice,so as to provide a clear and systemic explanation for the relationship between the source text and the target text,as well as the cognitive state, strategies of translator and the effect of the translation text,so as to reveal the translator's overall cognitive style in translation.Teahouse is one of the masterpiece of Lao She,a well-known modern Chinese writer. With a teahouse titled Yu Tai,the drama reveals the darkness and corruption of Chinese society for nearly half a century and the fate of people of different social classes. The drama embodies the profound language skills of Lao She,who assiduously resorted to a great number of stylistic devices including foregrounding, such as phonological foregrounding, dialectic foregrounding, repetition, metaphor as body part metaphor, metaphor of entities, metaphor of orientations, and cognitive deixis, etc. These stylistic means,on the one hand, embody the colloquial and performance characteristics of drama different from other literary genres;on the other hand, they also play a inseparable stylistic role in revealing the features of characters, the social relations between the characters, the theme of the drama, etc. This thesis probes into the two English translated versions of Teahouse by Ying Ruocheng and Howard whose translations are widely accepted from the following three aspects:1)foregrounding in Teahouse including phonological foregrounding, dialectic foregrounding, repetition and so on;2)metaphors consisting of metaphor of body parts such as face, metaphor of orientations such as “?/up”,“?/down”etc.,metaphors of entities such as metaphor of flavor, metaphor of color etc.;3)the personal deixis from the perspective of perspectivization.Based on the theories of foregrounding, metaphor and perspectiveization under the framework of cognitive stylistics, this thesis describes and analyzes the translation choices of the two translators at first.Reasonable and appropriate explanations are subsequently given based on the corresponding cognitive structures and cognitive mechanisms. This paper analyzes both the similarities and differences of cognitive strategies and cognitive styles between the two translators in their translation choices.Overall translation preference and cognitive inclination in translation of the two translators are analyzed from the perspective of cognitive stylistics.
