Translation is a process of textual reproduction. As an indispensiblepart of text, cohesion is crucial to translation. Owing to the fact thatdifferent languages vary from employing cohesive devices to create textsin the translation, translation theory and practice entail it to conductcomparative studies on cohesive devices in the translation. Recentlyscholars abroad and at home both carry through researches on cohesiontheory to advance its development. However, seldom do theycomparatively analyze cohesive devices between Chinese and English, with the literature work as a corpus, especially studies regarding impliedreasons and guidance for translation strategies.Based on the cohesion theory put forward by Halliday and Hasan, this thesis aims at comparatively analyzing the application of cohesivedevices in Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu, a famous work by Mo Yan and itsEnglish version, exploring the implied reasons and providing C-Etranslation strategies. This research takes the methods of qualitative andquantitative analysis, description and explanation as well. As forqualitative and quantitative analysis, the methods of sample survey, datastatistics and instance analysis are conducted. This study proves the application of cohesion theory to the literaturetranslation is worth trying. In particular, it finds out the largest differences consist in three cohesive devices: reference, ellipsis and lexical cohesion. Moreover, it gives detailed information to explain this phenomenon fromthree aspects of language structures, cultures and thinking models withexamples. Finally, the corresponding strategies of C-E translation ofcohesive devices are summarized: literal translation, amplification, omission and conversion.
